The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities

In 2017 I made a Nature Cube for the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale exhibition in South Korea (now in the permanent collection of the Nature Art Museum). More recently when I visited the Musée des Beaux Arts in Rennes and saw the Cabinet of the Marquis de Robien that was missing its Nature section I decided to expand my own to fill the gap.

Mine is based on the small garden I have and the intense relationship I developed with it. It is a series of Love Letters to my plants. It is an uncertain relationship as I deal with the uneasy relationship of native and non-native planting, the effects of climate change and for example the monoculture of the lawn. Like the Rennes Cabinet it is accompanied by drawings-every two days I would draw the trees in the garden, over and over again to get to know them better. This Cabinet is still growing, since South Korea it has been exhibited in Phoebus Gallery, Rotterdam and in Botanica Poetica curated by Cees de Boer at Galerie Ramakers, The Hague.

Many of the works include text as well as drawings. For example the Love Letter to my Grass contains the following:Pretty, thirsty, mono-culture beguiles/Care, love. optimistic equilibrium/Alive, still patchy, unbalanced rye/Questioning, uneasy green/Rebellious tufts, copious variety, baldness, bare/Happy verdant lawn.
