This forest on the top of the Salève mountains is haunting. It is on the French side of the French/Swiss border. All the pine trees are dead or dying, the other species remain healthy and verdant. I used to visit the region as a child, it has a special place in my heart and seeing this happen hurts. It is not yet clear what is causing the problem.
One tree forest was intended to be a drawing series and evolved into a series of miniature acrylic paintings on prepared wood panels. My aim was to capture the skeletal remains.
I spent the last year studying the trees, it became an obsession. These works are all based on a single tree.
